It’s been a little over a week since the release of Rihanna’s makeup line Fenty Beauty. The wildly successful launch has left other top competitors struggling to keep up. With it’s extensive range of 40 foundation shades, Fenty Beauty has emphasized inclusivity by providing a match for all skin tones and ethnicities! As a woman of colour, I was SUPER excited about the launch of this line and couldn’t wait to try the products out!
There’s no doubt that up until now, all beauty companies developed their products with a default light skin tone range in mind. Some have even stated that they refrain from creating darker shades because they “don’t sell.” The fact that all of the darker shades in Rihanna’s collection sold out almost instantly has definitely proven those companies wrong!
I know the struggle of trying to find shades that match my skin tone all too well. I always seemed to be stuck in between two shades, having to choose between being either too light or too dark. This is something that has really bothered me for years, but thanks to Rihanna and Fenty Beauty, things are finally changing. Not long after her launch, there was an influx of posts on Instagram from almost every major beauty company showcasing dark shades they’ll soon be releasing; a move that wasn’t well received by the public. Rihanna is being celebrated for promoting diversity while the rest are being criticized for seemingly jumping on the bandwagon.
But enough about beauty politics! Let’s get down to business!
I headed down to my local Sephora on launch day as I just couldn’t wait to get my hands on one of the products! I decided to start off with the Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation. After testing out various shades, I was able to find a perfect match and have been using it ever since! The foundation is priced at $42 which is a little bit cheaper than most brands sold at Sephora.
My initial impression of the product wasn’t favourable. While I was first applying the foundation, it definitely looked very cakey, even though I had only applied a thin layer. Luckily and to my surprise, it dried looking incredibly smooth! I only needed to use 1-2 pumps for complete coverage. Also, I am happy to report that it did not oxidize and leave my face looking orange as many foundations have done in the past! On the first day, I wore it for about 15 hours and it was long lasting just as it claims to be!
The only downside to this foundation is that it seems to dry pretty quickly. You have to work extremely fast in order to blend it really well before it sets or you’ll be left looking patchy.
Overall, I’ve had a great experience with this product and it’s something I can see myself continuing to use in the future. The pros (lightweight, long lasting, buildable, oil free, cruelty free) definitely outweigh the cons (forumula dries quickly). I generally don’t expect much from celebrity lines but so far, Fenty Beauty really lives up to all of it’s claims! It’s also great that it’s sold at Sephora because they have the BEST return policy! So if you decide to try the brand out but just aren’t feeling it, you can return the products for a complete refund!
